Use Xythos Drive to connect, or map, a network drive to a folder on a WebDAV server, effectively turning the Internet into a secure, shared virtual hard drive. The Xythos network drive behaves exactly like a Windows network drive, except that it uses HTTP and WebDAV^* protocols. This permits any Windows program to open and edit documents stored on a web server as easily as if they were on your computer. When editing a document from within a Microsoft Office application, you may not rename or delete a file in the "Save As" window. If you would like to rename or delete a file, do so as you would any other file on your computer.

As with other applications, Xythos Drive requires access to the user's Documents and Settings directory. Microsoft Windows does not provide access to this directory for guest accounts. To use Xythos Drive you must be logged into Windows with a valid Windows user account.

With WebDAV, a dispersed team connected by the Internet can safely and securely work together. WebDAV stands for "Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning". It is a set of extensions to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) standard. HTTP is the set of rules for reading and viewing text, graphic images, sound, video, and other multimedia files over the Internet. WebDAV adds rules for creating, changing, and moving documents, provide functionality to build web-based file storage that can be accessed from anywhere.

WebDAV also adds features that make possible collaborative editing and file management between users located remotely from each other on the Internet, including:

• Edit a document
• Add and remove people from the list of collaborators
• Grant read, write or sharing permissions for each user
• Lock the document to protect your changes from being overwritten
• Check-out, check-in, and retrieve previous versions
